Lastly, what treatments are available for patients with amnesia? While there is not a cure for amnesia, cognitive rehabilitation can help patients with anterograde amnesia. These tests can help doctors determine if patients are experiencing amnesia and possibly determine what is causing it. To diagnose amnesia, doctors may perform cognitive assessments, blood tests, neuropsychological testing, and bran imaging such as an MRI, CT, and EEG (Cooper, 2008). Patients with retrograde amnesia struggle with recalling past information, while patients with anterograde amnesia have difficulty remembering new information (Cleveland Clinic, 2020). In addition, there are different types of amnesia, but the two most common types are retrograde amnesia and anterograde amnesia (Cleveland Clinic, 2020). While my memory has improved significantly over time, many people who have amnesia do not experience improvement.Īmnesia can be temporary or permanent (Cleveland Clinic, 2020). In addition, I had difficulty remembering new information or tasks I wanted to achieve. I had trouble recalling the names of my best friends, forgot some of my past experiences, and I even struggled to identify the names of everyday objects at times. A few years ago, I sustained a concussion and I had significant difficulty remembering new and old information. Unfortunately, any disease or injury that affects the brain can result in the development of amnesia. However, examining the cause of amnesia, types, diagnosis, and treatment, will help increase understanding regarding this fascinating topic.įirst, why do people get amnesia? There are many different causes such as strokes, inflammation of the brain, hypoxia (lack of oxygen to the brain), Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, tumors, seizures, Alzheimer’s disease, certain medications, and concussions to name a few (Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research, 2022). While many have heard of amnesia, more detailed information about amnesia is lesser known. While Denise’s case is severe, it clearly illustrates what can happen to someone who is diagnosed with amnesia.Īmnesia is defined by the Mayo Clinic as “the loss of memories, including facts, information, and experiences” (Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research, 2022). However, she is still able to form new memories and has worked hard to rebuild her life and past relationships (Cooper, 2008). Some of her memories came back with time, but most did not. Even though everyone thought she would walk away unharmed, she woke up the next day and could not remember her name, who her family was, past experiences with her family, or who her friends were (Cooper, 2008). Denise Reagor, a student at Texas Woman’s University, got hit in the head with a ball while with friends.
